(Warning! This article is about Adult Entertainment. Some links may not be appropriate to view at work, and are not meant for viewers under 18~21 years old or where it is banned in your country).

Earlier this week the UK announced plans to enforce a “Porn Ban” that would block all adult websites by default from internet service providers (ISPs). The UK ban was somewhat unexpected, and per the proposal all UK households will not have access to internet porn unless they specifically request their Internet Service Providers to unblock the porn consent. This will certainly make for an awkward breakfast conversation with your spouse, and calling the ISP operator might make for some embarrassing moments for most people. Or what if you call to unblock porn without telling your spouse? How would he or she find out anyway if they aren’t also viewing inappropriate websites? Right? Haha.

But seriously, pornography is certainly a “touchy” subject, and has been for ages. Culturally, some societies are more conservative than others when it comes to sex. In the Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia uphold a full ban on pornographic content. In such countries, the rulers and government impose a lot of restrictions on individuals. These countries openly ban porn and there is no freedom of speech. Every letter printed in newspapers is scanned by government authorities. Most European countries and the United States are considered relatively more liberal and have practical opinions on pornography and related social matters. The UK is considered one of the more freer or liberal countries, so that is why this planned ban is more shocking.

Watching porn on the internet is a deeply personal matter. It was only when VHS videos released in the 80s became available that adult entertainment became more widely viewed. With the growth in online websites and webcams, porn has never been more popular or mainstream. The truth is simple. People are watching porn, and they like to do so in the privacy of their own home.

Porn is a Billion Dollar Business and It’s Growing

Through the years, adult entertainment has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. Former enterprise leaders like Playboy, Hustler, and Penthouse have paved the way for the hundreds of adult entertainment video studios such as Vivid Entertainment, Naughty America, Anabolic Video, Evil Angel, etc. These companies produce thousands of movies every year and the accessibility to these contents, as well as other free or paid sites like AsaAkiraLoveEvelynPornhub, xHamster, Youporn, and Redtube has never been easier. All you have to do is open up your computer, and search.

And perhaps at the end of the day that’s what this ban is all about. It’s not like in the olden days where young kids would look for the pile of Playboy magazines that his father was hiding away. The access to 18-and over content can easily been seen by minors, and this is a problem. However, some responsibility of parents should be called to action here. The same equivalent would be for underage drinking or smoking. The role of the parent to police their child’s action should be accountable. Banning pornography doesn’t seem like a solution.

Ok. So, the big question if you’re living in the UK is what do you do? If you don’t care, just pick up the phone and call your ISP and say give me my damn porn! However, if you want to be a little more discreet or want to hide your porn watching behavior from you wife, husband, or kids, perhaps you should look into a virtual private network (VPN).
