Mullvad VPN Review – US And EU Based IP Adresses

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

Mullvad VPN is brought to you by Amagicom AB which is a Gothenburg, Sweden based company. The service was created to defend privacy on the net and offer protection against IPRED, Data retention directive, DNS filtering and insecure wireless networks. In this detailed Mullvad VPN Review, we will evaluate the features offered by the service and decide if it is worth subscribing.

Server Locations and Site Access

Mullvad’s servers are located at United States, Germany, Sweden and Netherlands. Even though the company does not have servers in many geographical areas and important VPN markets, the service allows you bypass all sorts of restrictions and access frequently blocked sites like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Skype, Google Voice and Vonage from any network and country in the world (even in China, Brazil, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait). In addition, the service is tailor-made for those who wish to unlock shopping portals, bank sites and premium subscription based streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu, Rara, MTV, Spotify, HBO Go, ABC Player, NBC, NFL, CBS, MLB, Amazon Prime, Pandora, Deezer, Vudu, Eurosport, Viasat, Voddler, SVT, WimpMusic, KanalPlay, Zattoo, Sky1, Arte, Sport1 and RTL from any location in the world. The company offers country based VPN subscription so it is not possible to switch servers and unlock local content from multiple countries with one subscription plan.

VPN Speed and Bandwidth

Mullvad delivers its service through servers connected to 100 Mbit to 1 Gbit port speeds. The company does not restrict the speed and bandwidth that is available to its subscribers. This makes the service suitable for demanding activities like VOIP, downloading, streaming and online gaming. The company even allows P2P traffic so it is possible to secure bittorrenting activities.

Privacy Settings

Mullvad offers PPTP (128-bit Blowfish encryption) and OpenVPN (2048-bit RSA encryption) based VPN service. The high level of encryption available through the service ensures that your online activities remain hidden from your ISP, network administrator, boss, co-workers, nosy neighbors and hackers. The service also offers a superb hotspot protection that secures passwords, social accounts and financial transactions from criminals and sniffing programs when you are using an open wireless network at airport, shopping mall, coffee shop, hotel or public park.

The company does not keep a log of users’ browsing activities. The company cannot provide any information to third parties or law enforcement agencies since it doesn’t keep a record of anything.

Supported Operating Systems

Mullvad’s OpenVPN solution works with Windows, Mac and Linux based computers. The company even offers a PPTP based solution for Android, iPads, iPhones and other devices that do not support OpenVPN. The company offers a custom client for Windows, Mac and Linux which includes advanced features like DNS leak protection and the ability to block internet in case of disconnections. The installation and setup is easy thanks to the detailed instructions provided by the company on its official site. The company allows use of one connection from 3 different devices simultaneously so it is possible to secure multiple devices at the same time by using the same VPN account details.

Customer Support

The company provides customer support through email. While the lack of live chat and telephonic support is disappointing, the support staff makes it a point to respond to most queries in a timely fashion.

Pricing Options

Mullvad’s unlimited VPN service is available for 5 EUR per month. The company offers a free 3 hour trial which should be enough to give you an idea about the speed and connectivity provided by the service. To maintain total anonymity, it is possible to use anonymous payment methods like cash and bitcoins while subscribing to the service.

Final Verdict

Mullvad offers high level of security and a working VPN client at affordable rates. On the other hand, the company offers a limited choice of server locations and it may not serve the needs of people looking for non-American or non-EU IP addresses. We recommend checking out the free trial to see if the service meets your needs. For more information, please visit: www.mullvad.net.

Using it right now, think it’s an excellent VPN.

Connecting to it is quick and easy, privacy is definite and the speed seems very fast. No problems with streaming as yet. Also, offer to pay by cash is a quirky but smart option, guaranteeing no paper trails for the really paranoid.
