MexVPN Review – How Does it Rate?

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

MexVPN is a fairly new VPN service provider. Established in 2010, the service is made available by a United States based company. In this thorough MexVPN Review, we will evaluate the features offered by the service and check if it is worth our time and money.

Server Location and Site Access

MexVPN has more than 20 VPN servers in United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland and Netherlands. While the company doesn’t have servers in many geographical areas, the service would allow you to unlock IP restricted sites that are available only within these 5 countries as well as circumvent the firewalls and censorship imposed by many ISPs and network administrators. As soon as you subscribe to the service, you should be able to access Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, Skype, Vonage, Twitter and Google-Voice from your organization and locations such as China, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brazil and Bahrain. Moreover, the service allows you to unlock premium streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, ABC, Zattoo, Spotify, Amazon Instant videos, CBS, NBC, Fox-TV, HBO Go, CBC, BBC iPlayer, iTV Player, CTV, E!, Spacecast, Wilmaa, Rara, Deezer, Sport1, RTL, Film1, Lovefilm, CWTV, Dramafever, Vudu and Xfinity from any country or region in the world. The company permits unlimited server switching with its Shared and Dynamic IP plans so it becomes possible to unlock local content from all the five countries where the company has servers with just one subscription.

VPN Speed & Bandwidth

MexVPN’s servers are connected to 1 GB dedicated nodes so the service is able to deliver high speeds required for activities like streaming HD content, downloading, Voice-Over-IP and online gaming. In addition, the company has chosen not to impose any kind of speed throttling or bandwidth limit on its customers so you can remain connected for hours without worrying about exceeding your monthly limits.

Privacy Settings

MexVPN offers privacy and anonymity through PPTP and L2TP protocols (128 bit encrypted channels). These two protocols offer a good mix of security and compatibility but they offer less protection than the considerably more secure OpenVPN protocol. The service secures your personal details like passwords, IP address, social accounts, financial transactions and identity and keeps them hidden from ISP, administrators and hackers. In addition, the hotspot protection provided by the service will keep you safe when you are connected to wireless networks at airports, parks, malls, coffee shops and restaurants. The company respects the privacy of its customers and it will not hand over customer data to anyone unless it is compelled to do so by legal authorities.

Supported Operating Systems

MexVPN’s VPN solution works with Windows (7/Vista/XP), Linux, iPhone, iPad, Mac OS X, Android and Symbian. Since the service is also compatible with DD-WRT routers, it is also possible to use the service with gaming consoles (Xbox, PS 3) and Smart TVs. The company provides a proprietary VPN software for Windows (32 and 64 bit versions available) but other devices and systems require manual configuration. However, the setup and configuration is extremely simple since the company provides detailed instructions for all operating systems and devices.

Customer Support

The customer support is available through phone, email and ticket system. Since the company does not provide troubleshooting information on its official portal so you will need to contact the support staff even for minor technical issues.

Pricing Options

MexVPN offers dedicated, shared and dynamic IP plans. The dedicated IP plans (providing a fixed IP address in a country of your choice) start from $14 per month whereas the shared IP plans are available for $10 per month. The company doesn’t provide a free trial or refund so there is no way to test the service without investing a little money.

Final Verdict

MexVPN delivers average VPN service but it is clearly not the best provider out there. The company doesn’t have servers in many countries plus its VPN plans are little expensive for the service that it provides. We recommend checking the service only if other services are not working for you or if you want to try a new service having servers in US, UK, Canada, Netherlands and Switzerland.
