Two Jailbroken iPhone Security Tips You Should Know

Sunday, June 8th, 2014

Jailbreaking is the process of removing access and security limitations imposed by Apple on iPhones, iPods, iPads and Apple TV. While jailbreaking does allow you to access your device’s file system and install apps that are not available on Apple Store, it also makes your Apple device more vulnerable to different types of security attacks. Jailbroken iPhone security is extremely important. This article will show how you can make your iPhone (or iPad) secure even after jailbreaking it.

1) Change the Root Password

Since jailbreaking provides unrestricted access to iOS file system, you would be able to change the root password of the device. One reason why many iPhone owners become victims of security attacks immediately after jailbreaking their phones is because they fail to change the root password of their device. Since Apple does not provide root access by default, it can afford to use the same root password (such as alpine) for all its devices. However, as soon as you are out of the secure Apple ecosystem by jailbreaking your device, the default password becomes your nemesis since it allows hackers to gain control of your iPhone as well as your personal data.

Considering the security threats associated with the root password on a jailbroken device, it makes sense to change the root password of your device immediately after jailbreaking it. Follow the steps given below to change the root password of your iPhone:

a) Download and install MobileTerminal app on your iPhone via Cydia. This app would allow you to access and manipulate iOS’ file system through a command prompt.

b) Launch the MobileTerminal app. You may need to reboot the iPhone if the app doesn’t run properly.

c) Type su to request root access. When asked for password, type alpine and hit enter.

d) Once you have root access, type passwd to request for the password change and hit enter. Next, you need to enter the new password two times and you are done.

e) You can also change the default mobile password by typing passwd mobile and hitting the enter key. Enter your new password twice and your phone will have a new mobile password.

It goes beyond saying that you must use a very strong password as your new root password. Avoid using your name, zipcode, phone number as your password as these can be cracked easily. Make sure to use a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, special characters and numbers within your password to remain safe from dictionary and brute force attacks.

2) Use a VPN

Since an iPhone becomes more vulnerable to security threats after jailbreaking, it makes sense to use security solutions like Virtual Private Networks to secure your internet access. A VPN encrypts your data and routes your online sessions through a secure tunnel so the data residing on your phone remains secure even if you are accessing the internet through unsecured networks (example, public Wi-Fi hotspots). There are many VPN solutions available for jailbroken Apple devices (example, GuizmoVPN) that provide total security and privacy on the internet. For additional security, you may also install security apps available for jailbroken iPhones.
