How To Watch Mayweather vs Pacquiao Fight Online

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

Yeah, boy! It’s just what we’ve all been waiting for. Yep, the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao fight is finally signed, and they will battle it out this weekend on May 2nd in Las Vegas. I’m not a boxing historian but I’m a regular fan who has been fortunate to have seen some great fights on cable and PPV in years past. I am sure that I’m not the only super pumped up boxing fan who can’t wait for the Fight of the Century. The mega event promises to be an action packed extravaganza that will pit two boxing legends against each other for the very first time. Five years in the making (or maybe five years too late), the match will be the richest fight in the boxing history and will earn the two boxers a combined figure of $300 million dollars. Wow!

The Mega Fight is Finally Here!

It was predicted as early as 2009 that a fight between undefeated, five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao could be one of the highest grossing fights in the sporting history. However, the bout never actually happened since the two camps couldn’t agree to the terms of the fight. The main areas of contention included drug testing, purse split, location and the provider that will broadcast the event (Mayweather favored Showtime while Pacquiao wanted HBO to do the honors). After years of intense negotiations, the two sides have finally agreed to a common set of terms that has paved the way for one of the most eagerly awaited sporting events in the recent memory.

When is the Fight?

This is a really good question, and you don’t want to be late. The Mayweather vs Pacquiao bout will take place at MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas on May 2nd. The gates of the venue will open at 2 PM and several undercard bouts are scheduled to take place before the main event. As far as getting tickets for the event is concerned, you are out of luck because only a limited number of tickets were sold to the general public and they too were snapped up in two minutes. Anyone who wants to watch the event live must now get their tickets from sites like StubHub where they are selling for thousands of dollars.

How Can You Watch the Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao Fight?

For folks who can’t make it to Las Vegas or afford the ticket price, the next best option is to watch the event on TV, computer or a mobile device through Pay Per View (PPV). Showtime and HBO have the rights to broadcast the fight and depending on your cable provider or ISP, you can expect to pay $90-$100 for watching the event. If you want to catch the fight via this route, bear in mind that the broadcast time for the PPV event would be 9:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. PT).

If you want to watch the fight online, you must order the event through your cable provider’s or ISP’s website. Some provider’s (such as Verizon) are allowing their subscribers to watch the fight through a number of devices (TV, computer, Smartphone, tablet etc.) while for others (such as DirecTV), you would be restricted to watching the event just on your TV. Please check with your cable provider or ISP beforehand whether it is streaming the event online through apps or browsers. Depending on your provider, you would be able to order via remote, phone or through the web.

Here are some links from where you can order the event through PPV:
–  Showtime  (Showtime redirects you to your ISP or cable provider’s site)
–  HBO
–  Verizon FiOS
–  DirecTV
–  Time Warner Cable
–  AT&T U-verse
–  Comcast
–  Charter
–  Cox Communications
–  Optimum

DISH is running a special promotional offer where all new subscribers can watch the fight for free. However, new customers would need to sign up a 24 month contract with the provider to qualify for the offer. Make sure to use the code “BOXING” while signing up so that you can watch the event for free.

If you are based in UK, you can watch the event live on Sky Sports. Sky is charging £20 but you would need to get up at 4 AM to make sure that you don’t miss the action!

Other Alternatives to Watch the Fight

If you don’t want to spend $100 to watch the event, you can head to the nearest restaurant, bar or casino that has the commercial license to broadcast the fight. However, be prepared to shell out some extra money since commercial PPV licenses cost thousands of dollars for a single event.

Yet another way to watch the fight is to pool together money for a single PPV license. In this way, none of you would have to bear the full cost and you would also get a chance to enjoy the fight with your friends and family members.

It may also possible to watch the fight through third party websites or apps that may not have legal rights to show the fight.

However, be warned that Showtime has already filed lawsuits against sites that were promising to show the fight live. If you’re relying on these illegal sites to view, you might want to think twice. Showtime is doing all it can to stop the pirates from broadcasting the event, relying on third party streaming sites or apps may not be the best way to watch the fight.
