YES! I’ve been waiting for this service to launch, and now it’s here. With the fifth season of “Game of Thrones” about to make it’s debut, HBO has decided to make the occasion extra special by launching its very own standalone streaming service “HBO Now”. First hinted at by HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler in mid-October (as reported by us here – https://vpncoupons.com/hbo-offer-standalone-streaming-service-starting-2015/), HBO Now is set to revolutionize the pay-TV industry, increase competition among online streaming service providers and help people to finally cut the cord. I really believe that the service will be a game changer, and will prove to be a formidable competitor to other streaming services like NetFlix or Amazon Prime.

What Is HBO Now?

So what’s the big deal? HBO Now is a standalone, over the top, online-only streaming service from HBO. Unlike the current streaming option available from HBO (HBO Go), it doesn’t require a cable TV subscription which makes it extremely attractive for the cord cutters. The service would enable 80 million American households who have not yet subscribed to HBO as well as 10 million broadband subscribers who have not subscribed to any streaming service to become part of the HBO family without any expensive overhead.

HBO Now provides instant access to the network’s award-winning original series and exclusive blockbuster movies. Until now, it was impossible to watch episodes of “Game of Thrones” online without shelling out money for the cable but with HBO Now, you can watch the latest episodes of the series on the web as soon as they air on the TV. The service also provides unrestricted access to other popular series like True Detective, Boardwalk Empire, Girls, Silicon Valley, The Wire, Entourage, The Sopranos, The Leftovers and Band of Brothers. However, subscribers of the service won’t be able to access the live feed of the HBO channel plus live sporting events would be shown with a slight delay.

How To Subscribe To HBO Now?

HBO has signed a 90 day contract with Apple so currently the service is available only to Apple iTunes account holders or subscribers of Cablevision. However, you don’t need an Apple device like iPad, iPhone or Apple TV to watch the service since it can be streamed through any web browser. The network has promised to launch the Android app of the service pretty soon plus it is also working on making the service available through other devices.

To subscribe to the service, you just need to log into your iTunes account and download the HBO Now app from the iTunes store. The service costs $14.99 a month plus there is also a 30 day free trial available for new subscribers. The good news is that there are no long term contracts applicable so you have the option of opting out at any time. However, it is not possible to end the subscription through HBO’s website, you would need to unsubscribe via the provider through which you signed up for the service (Apple or Cablevision). How To Access HBO Now Outside US?

Like the HBO Go service, HBO Now is available only to subscribers who are based in United States. However, since the service doesn’t require a cable subscription, it should be a lot easier for expats, tourists and business flyers to access the service from abroad. However, you do need a US iTunes account and a US IP address to be able to download and access the service. Just remember to change your IP address through a reliable VPN service every time you want to watch your favorite shows on HBO Now and you won’t face any problems. If you need a VPN, you can try VyprVPN, IPVanish, HideMyAss, or one of the other recommended VPN services listed on our VPN Rankings page.
