FrootVPN is a totally free privacy service that made its debut very recently (September’ 2014). The service came into limelight when it was advertised on Piratebay’s (TPB) homepage in October’ 2014. As a result, the service attracted a lot of attention and it even managed to sign up 100,000 customers in just one week. The team behind the service has over 10 years of experience in network administration and the service also seems to have the blessing of the TPB team. But is the service any good? Read our FrootVPN review given below to get an answer to this question.
Server Locations & Site Access – FrootVPN has servers in 19 countries that include Russia, Hong Kong, Israel, Isle of Man, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Japan, Australia, Singapore, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Sweden, USA, Canada, France and the UK. They recently increased the number of servers due to demand of their customers.
The service provides unrestricted access to sites like Gmail, Facebook, YouTube, Skype, Twitter etc. that are blocked in many organizations and schools and it can even help to bypass the censorship imposed by governments of many countries (China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Brazil and Thailand are some notable examples). In addition, the service can be used by Swedish expats and business travelers to unlock IP-restricted content which is available only inside Sweden. By changing your IP to a Swedish IP provided by FrootVPN, you can freely access Swedish sites like Spotify, Eurosport, Voddler, WimpMusic, SVTPlay, MTV Sweden and Rara from any location in the world.
VPN Speed & Bandwidth – Even though FrootVPN is a free service, it does not restrict speed or bandwidth for its subscribers. The provider boasts of latest VPN optimized hardware as well as servers connected to 10 GBPS backbone plus its experienced team ensures that all customers get high speeds with minimum latency. Apart from providing excellent speeds for browsing, downloading, FTP, VOIP, streaming and gaming; the service also supports bittorrenting sessions.
Privacy Settings – FrootVPN provides 128 bit encryption through PPTP protocol, 168 bit encryption via L2TP protocol and up to 20148 bit encryption through the OpenVPN protocol. OpenVPN should be your preferred choice for privacy but if you are trying to setup the service on an older mobile device or are not worried about your privacy then PPTP and L2TP are reasonably good options as well.
The service makes it easy to be anonymous on the web, protect identity online and fight government surveillance. For those who connect to the web through public Wi-Fi hotspots, the service offers an easy way for protecting their personal and financial details from hacking and eavesdropping. The service encrypts all kinds of online sessions so you can rest assured that your identity or browsing activities won’t be revealed to your ISP under any circumstances.
FrootVPN does not log any kind of data (not even IP address or timestamp) plus it does not sell or rent user details to third parties.
Supported Operating Systems – FrootVPN is a cross-platform service that works with Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8), Android, Linux, Mac and iOS (iPhones and iPads). There is no custom client available but the provider does provide detailed setup guides that make it really easy to set up the service. However, setup guides are missing for some systems (for instance, OpenVPN guide for Android) so you may have to refer to other sources for setting up the service. The company is one of the few privacy providers that support IPv6 (via OpenVPN) which is definitely a big plus.
Customer Support – FrootVPN provides email based customer support. Since it is a free VPN service, the support is not as top notch as provided by paid VPN providers. However, there are some troubleshooting instructions available on the provider’s site which could help you to sortyou’re your connection or speed problems.
Pricing Options – FrootVPN is uber inexpensive, and users can enjoy their service for as little as $2,99/month when they subscribe to a 12-months package. The team managing the service is top-tier, and they have been able to offer subscription costs substantially lower than the competition. The provider does not ask for any personal details (except for an email address) during signup so you may also subscribe anonymously (by using a disposable email address).
Final Verdict – As a low-cost VPN service, FrootVPN doesn’t disappoint. FrootVPN deliver a fast and reliable service. If you are looking for a low-cost privacy service that you can rely on, don’t forget to check out FrootVPN. For more information, please visit: www.frootvpn.com.
